Stiv Mackey

I started my career in carpentry and freelancing wood products such as tables, brackets, shelving and armoires. I found a passion for metal when I began making some tools I needed that you just couldn’t buy. I joined the Blacksmith Guild, built a forge and started to “heat it and beat it”. I’ve been into all things metal ever since. Being environmentally mindful, I work with found material for most of my pieces. The modern term for this is "upcycling." It is a plus for mother earth and adds character to the pices. Visualizing a reincarnated form in an object assumed to be obsolete inspires me. It is a very rock and roll approach to art which is why I am so drawn to it. My personal style reflects a sense of humor - do not take life so seriously. At the same time, focusing on quality and value draws my complete attention.

Technique will vary depending on how I want the finished piece to look. One piece may strictly involve traditional methods of forging and hammering. Others will involve or include more modern techniques and tools. Generally there is some degree of forging, cutting, welding and grinding involved in all of my work. I like to embellish pieces with various materials such as leather or stone to give them a more unique look. The majority of my work is hand painted which gives the old metal a new look.

While my shop and work environment is very chaotic, my philosophy is simple... keep an open mind, treat the body as a temple and celebrate spirit. Inspire others on this path.
