TACA Highland Rim Chapter September 2004 Newsletter & Minutes
September 18, 2004 Meeting Minutes:
The Chapter met at Claudia Lee's studio and enjoyed a potluck lunch before the meeting. Members in attendance were: Susan DeMay, Tom Fuhrman, Noreen Grisolano, Andrzej Gutek, Tim Hintz, Arlene Knaak, Claudia Lee, Meredith Novak, Masako Onodera, Deborah Sam, Adele Seitzinger, Joyce Sievers, Virginia Walker, Carol Ventura, and Mike Whiteman.
Noreen reported that the Chapter has a bank balance of $1,606.82.
Several members said that the Pacesetters ACC exhibition was wonderful after Joyce Sievers thanked the Chapter for helping with the postcard.
Susan DeMay encouraged everyone to attend the TACA Biennial opening at the Tennessee State Museum on September 25th to show our support for crafts. Many of our Chapter members have pieces in the exhibit, including Jeanne Brady, Bob Coogan, Graham Campbell, Tim Hintz, Lisa Klakulak, John Lucas, Masako Onodera, Teresa Swystun, and Kim Winkle.
Mike Whiteman reported that Fall Fun Fest 2004 was a success! The members voted unanimously not to offer any free booth spaces, that the future coordinator will be paid $350 or half of the money collected for the booth spaces (whichever is more), and that this year's $350 profit will be donated to the TACA Retail Space Fund.There will be a TACA Marketing Workshop with Bruce Baker on March 19-20 at the Craft Center.
Deadline Extended for the Annual Holiday Festival and Exhibition
Both large and small pieces of high originality and quality are needed to fill the large gallery at the Crafts Center for the upcoming Highland Rim Member Show, which will be part of the well-attended Annual Holiday Festival. Everything submitted must be for sale, but if it does not meet the standards of the Gallery, it will be rejected. Extra inventory will be needed to replace the work as it is sold, so be prepared to submit a lot of items. The inventory sheet may be photocopied and should be turned in with the work in November, but the contract needs to be sent to the Crafts Center ASAP. Show and tell (bring something that you have made to show the group) and elections will take place at our annual holiday party, on Saturday, December 4th, 4pm, at Carol Ventura and Andrzej Gutek's home in Cookeville (cventura@tntech.edu or 931 520-3962).The Southern Edition of the Art Fair Source Book can be seen at the Crafts Center Library and at the Alley Cat Studio at 715 East Spring St., Suite C, Cookeville (e-mail: acstudio@frontiernet.net).
Several HR members will participate in the Art Prowl Studio Tour on October 16 & 17 and Off The Beaten Path Studio Tour on October 30 & 31st.
Highland Rim Members in the News:
The catalog for Susan DeMay and Diane Apple's show, Clay and Textiles, at Cumberland University (November 9 - December 10) was sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission.
Adele Seitzinger's work is included in the Cumberland Bead Society Exhibit at the Craft Center.
Sadie Wang was awarded a Tennessee Arts Commission Grant.
Carol Ventura went to China in July and August with the Fulbright-Hays Seminar Abroad Program. If you are a K-12 or college humanities teacher or librarian, you should consider applying for next year's program at http://e-grants.ed.gov, which is due on October 19th. Carol published Tapestry Crochet Around the World and Tapestry Crochet a Cat Pillow in PIECEWORK, September/October; Stars of Liberty Pillow in CROCHET WORLD, August; and Stars and Stripes Shoulder Bag in CROCHET!, July; and Traditions of the Haida Gwaii in WOODCARVING MAGAZINE, May/June. Her tapestry crochet was featured in a special issue of INTERWEAVE KNITS CROCHET.And what have YOU been up to lately? Submit your "news" to the Highland Rim Secretary.
