TACA Highland Rim Chapter September 2006 Newsletter & Minutes

The Chapter met at the home and studio of Richard Painter and Kathy McGlammery. In attendance were: Anastasia Azure, Jeanne Brady, Susan DeMay, Noreen Grisolano, Andrzej Gutek, Tim Hintz, Ben Jefferson, Claudia Lee, John Lucas, Bill Meharg, Molly Meharg, Gail Ruhl, Mike Ulschak, Carol Ventura , Mike Whiteman, and Cara Young.
GROUP EXHIBITION: Our Chapter Exhibition, at the Heydel Fine Arts Center at Cumberland University in Lebanon, will be November 1 - 30, 2006, with a 4:30-6:00 pm Reception on Tuesday, November 7th. Members may exhibit 2 to 3 pieces. Susan DeMay had no problem during her exhibit, but since there is no insurance, the release below must be included with your work. There are a few black pedestals, so please bring pedestals (that can be painted black) for 3-D work. Label information must be sent to Carol ( cventura@tntech.edu ) before October 7th. You may leave your work with Tim Hintz (118 Ponder Lane, Smithville, 615 597-8770) or Carol (163 Big Spring Circle, Cookeville, 931 520-3962) before October 30th. We will set up the show on Wednesday, November 1st. Tim will speak about his work at the reception and hopes that others will be able to speak about their work, too. Please call Tim if you can help set up the show or if you can attend the reception.
This RELEASE must be included with your work:Neither Cumberland University nor the Highland Rim Chapter are responsible for loss, damage, or theft of work on exhibit at the Heydel Fine Arts Center.

Your Name and DateFall Fun Fest: Mike reported that 21 craft booths were set up Friday night and Saturday morning at the recent Fun Fest. Next year he will charge an electric fee of $10 to cover the lighting needs on Friday.
For our program, Richard Painter demonstrated how to light and photograph one of Tim's chairs, then showed us how to adjust the digital image with Photo Studio 4.0 on his computer. Richard also discussed and demonstrated the many ways he uses digital images to produce and publicize his work.
Treasurer's Report: The balance is $1690.13.
www.finecrafts.org: Andrzej (agutek@tntech.edu) will make Highland Rim members a free web page or update a HR member web page. Send him negatives, slides, photos, and text. Digital images are best, but he can scan others.

Our “Holiday” meeting will be Saturday, December 2nd, 2006 at Carol and Andrzej's home (163 Big Spring Circle, Cookeville, 931 520-3962) at 11:00 a.m. We will elect officers and have “Show and Tell,” so bring something to show off! It's also a potluck, as usual.Highland Rim in the News:
Susan DeMay's article about Sylvia Hyman's exhibit at the Nashville Public Library will appear in “Kerameiki Techni,” a Greek publication. Susan curated "CeraMIX", a show at Vanderbilt University that will be up during the SECAC/MACA conference in October. The 'mix' is about the diversity of clay; its construction, surfaces, and messages. Susan will conduct a workshop during the conference that is open to the public. A day pass can be purchased for the workshop on Saturday, October 28th, by contacting michael.aurbach@vanderbilt.edu.
To celebrate 20 years in business, Freestone Pottery created 50 signed, numbered, and dated Ikebana Vases . See them at www.freestonepottery.com. The Mary Kay Company commissioned Freestone Pottery to create 80 mugs as Christmas gifts for their directors.
Jeanne Brady participated in an ACC faculty and Resident exhibition at the Folkarts Center, Asheville, NC (April-June), that traveled to the Renaissance Center in Dixon, TN (July-Sept).
John Lucas demonstrated at the Tennessee Association of Woodturners Annual Symposium in August and had an article in the Fall 2006 “Woodturning Design.” He will demonstrate woodturning at the Fall TACA show.
Kim Winkle will demonstrate surface design at the Fall TACA show and will teach a workshop at Arrowmont School of Crafts in October (20-22). Kim and Graham Campbell have work in the One of Kind Furniture Exhibition at Finer Things Gallery (Sept. 29- Nov. 7).
Gail Ruhl has opened The Art Place, a gallery in Woodbury (hours by appointment; 615 765-5055). An Open House will take place on November 1st.
Tim Hintz was featured in the “Tennessee Magazine.
Carol Ventura' self-published a new book, BEAD & FELTED TAPESTRY CROCHET, and one of her crochet pieces was included in THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CROCHET TECHNIQUES. Other recent publications include projects and articles in “Bead Unique,” “Bead & Button,” “CrochetMe,” “Simply Creative Crochet,” and “Woodcarving.” Carol will teach 3 tapestry crochet workshops at the Yarn Café in NJ in October.
