Report from the TACA Spring Show: The show was closed Sat night because of the weather. The chapter booth made around $800 which was much less than in previous years. Hopefully the weather will be better for the fall show. Awards were given out but none of our members won any.
The HR web page www.finecrafts.org. As a member of the Highland Rim Chapter, you can have your own gallery page for free. Just send the pictures and info to Andrzej at agutek@tntech.edu. Member's pages can accommodate pictures up to 800 pixels/72 dpi. Jpeg is the best format, but all types of photos and prints are OK.
CHAPTER EXHIBITION: ALL CONTRACT MUST BE IN BY JUNE 1st. Work MUST be DELIVERED by JULY 6th. The exhibition will be in the North Windows gallery at the Craft Center which is a very small gallery so people should limit their submissions to 1 -2 pieces. With the work bring a RESUME and ARTIST STATEMENT. All pieces must be priced for insurance reasons even if they are not for sale.
We need ideas for a place to have next year’s chapter exhibition. Space should be secure, well lit, have some display fixtures and allow for good foot traffic in a well traveled location. Any ideas please submit to Jeanne Brady
TACA Highland Rim Chapter Booth report: Anyone wanting to participate in the TACA group booth for the spring show must get in touch with Cheryl Ludwig (931-265-2588) ASAP. There are limited spaces available. We had a brief meeting after the chapter meeting of those people who have paid for their spots. Set up (April 30) and tear down are required and working when scheduled during the weekend. Future meeting TBS after March 1st.. Booth fee is $25.
Board Meeting Report: Tim Hintz reported on the recent board meeting: TACA is running on a deficit and has been for the last few years. Bill Mullins, the new director, will assume part time hours over the summer to help with this. TACA has been soliciting more members to help with income and has 30 more members this year than last. Grants also help with income. The fiscal year has moved to July 1st to June 30th from a calendar year so some budget issues were expected with that change. There will not be a biennial show this year – TACA is trying for 2012. Reminder that TACA is a member driven organization so if someone wants a workshop or anything else any member can make that happen. Trips to artists’ studios, galleries, etc all take organization but anyone can do it so step on up and take charge!
PRESENTATION ON FACEBOOK BY JESS JONES WAS A BIG SUCCESS!!! Thanks to Jess for sharing her facebook page with us and the pro’s and con’s of having a facebook page. Facebook is a social networking site that can allow you to communicate with your customers and other potters, receive news from TACA and any other organizations that have facebook pages. Some people spend a lot of time on facebook and others find in a nuisance. It started out as a social networking site for college students and has grown in popularity among adults. It differs from MySpace by being less cluttered and more focused on just social communication. As with any web posting, Jess did say that once you post an image on facebook it becomes technically theirs and other people can download images from your facebook page. However, this is probably true also of websites although maybe not as easily.
CLOSINGS: The Magical Muse in Cookeville has closed. Stan could no longer handle it with difficulties with his health, recent losses in his family, a faltering economy and difficulty getting community support. Consequently First Fridays are also on hold indefinitely. Arlene Dubois has taken some work in the Intrepid Traveler and Steven Spicer will be expanding into that space.

- Fall Fun Fest and Craft Fair on September 11 and 12, 2009. Greetings to all, Big time cool update! Arts/Crafts area will be located where it used to be and ought to be; connected to the square, starting at corner of Jefferson and Broad...slid one block up from where we were last year... no inflatables blocking us out from view. My last letter mentioned 2 personal heroes for that weekend...well... I've got a new one at the top of my list. Gail Luna is president of Cookeville Arts Council {as well as Bryan Symphony Orchestra}, she presented our case {location and value of A/C area} to Cityscape board of directors and accomplished what I wanted to but I'm sure I never could have achieved on my own. Of course; the input of several local groups and many individuals who voiced their concerns with the relocation/value of the A/C area impacted on Cityscape's decision, and I thank all who took the time to express their opinions, I know that all the input helped to affect the board's view of the event. I just gotta give major kudos to Gail for working to se al the deal. Other than that please just follow the rules/guidelines on app. form; deadline, required photos/slides, this is a juried show, those accepted last year are not pre-accepted for this year. We've only got 20 spaces; are striving to keep it original, diverse, high quality work. That's it for now. Other than our moving back to where we belong {WOOHOO!}, all should be the same as before {but better than last year}...Friday afternoon/evening, all day Sat. into the evening as late as you choose. Being back on the square will make a big difference on evening sales. Anyone from out of town; I expect to get a good deal with Star Motor Inn again, will let you know when I do. **Applications and info can be found at fallfunfest.com or finecrafts.org. Take care, will be in touch, send in your apps! Mike woodmiketn@yahoo.com.
- ART PROWL, Cookeville, November 13, 14. See the website for details and application
- OFF THE BEATEN PATH, Smithville area October 24, 25
- FALL TACA BOOTH – Coordinator and exhibitors needed. Need at least 5 people to have the booth. Coordinator will have to take Cheryl’s place as VP because the credit card machine has to be run by an officer and the company runs a credit check on whoever that is. Bill Luton is willing to help anyone with digital imaging of their work BILL@LUTON.US
- FAIRFIELD GLADE ART GUILD ANNOUNCES JUNE STUDIO TOURS (931-459-2789 or lareiss@frontiernet.net). Visitors can observe elements of the process of several artists by participating in a tour through their home studios. Sponsored by the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade, the June 2009 Studio Tour will be held Saturday, June 13, 2009. The Plateau Creative Arts Center, 451 Lakeview Drive, will feature additional demonstrations by two participating artists during the tour. Admission to this event is $10.00 (high school and elementary students are free), and ticket sales begin May 11 at the Plateau Creative Arts Center. To purchase tickets with a credit card payment, call 707-7249 or mail your remittance to the Art Guild at the PCAC address. Tickets can also be obtained at the Village Green Mall from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon on May 18, May 26, June 1, June 8, June 11, and June 12. Sharron Eckert and Judi Moenck will introduce tour participants to their art forms through demonstrations at the PCAC. Sharron sews long leaf pine needles with a coiling technique using various threads including raffia and waxed linens, and Judi will have several pieces of handwoven beadwork jewelry in various stages of completion.
- ART UPSTAIRS gallery is has turned out to be quite a successful exhibit space. We have made quite a few sales and the openings are well attended. The last opening had well over 80 people in attendance. We still do not have insurance but we feel fairly secure about pieces not being taken from the space. All spots have been taken for this year and we will be mailing out an application form out soon, for both Art Prowl and another for the Art Upstairs Gallery. The deadlines are July 1 and Sept. 1. Each form will require 5 excellent digital photographs of your work, but the gallery space requires a proposal for its use. Two person and group shows are recommended and we welcome conceptual art and installations (small). Large installations are possible as long has we have access of to the 2000 square foot room next to the gallery, but that great space has limitations, like no heat or air conditioning and very limited electricity for your exhibit. The Art Prowl requires a $125 fee which includes membership and for ART Upstairs the fee is 25% of sales. We are looking forward to Nan Jacobson's exhibit on June 5.(from Merritt)
