TACA Fall Show, September 25, 26, 27: Volunteers are needed. Email or call the office. There is a need for people to help relieve artists as booth sitters and its always helpful to have artists to do this.
TACA Spring Show: Rob Harvey has volunteered (thank you ROB!) to organize the chapter booth for the spring show. Our goal is to have a chapter booth at both shows but nobody stepped forward to organize one for the fall show so we’re aiming for spring now. One of the goals of the chapter show is to provide a venue for emerging artists who do not have enough work or who can’t afford to have a booth of their own the opportunity to show. Look for more information and deadline dates.
The HR web page www.finecrafts.org. As a member of the Highland Rim Chapter, you can have your own gallery page for free. Just send the pictures and info to Andrzej at agutek@tntech.edu. Member's pages can accommodate pictures up to 800 pixels/72 dpi. Jpeg is the best format, but all types of photos and prints are OK.
FALL FUN FEST: Mike reported that the arts portion was put back where it should be in the front and the festival seemed well attended and successful. This is a major fund raiser for Highland Rim chapter. There were many TACA members who returned to the show including: Susan Smith, Adele Seitzinger, Ray Hatch, Glass Studio, Stan Rodriguez in a group booth , Debbie Whiteman, Elizabeth Bly. There is room for 24 booths. Application deadline is in July and the form and date can be found on the Fall Fun Fest website. Mike reported that the event coordinators will most likely be asking for more money next year to pay the city for the booth spaces. They have not charged us in the past. This will most likely mean a rise in booth fees from $60 to $85 or $90. We made $1440 this year. Mike was paid $600 so we cleared $840.
We have $2009.99 in the bank now.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Arlene Dubo is offering studio/retail space to artists at a reasonable rate in the space that housed The Intrepid Traveler. She also creates web sites for artists for $200 and does a really nice job. You can check out my web site that she just did at earthworkspottery.net or Marilee Hall’s marileehallceramics.com. Arlene can be reached at arlenedubo@hotmail.com or call 931-520-8155.
October 17 2 – 3:00. Workshop – Watkins College of Art, Nashville on marketing crafts and visual arts and legal issues such as theft of ideas and unfair competition – “trademark, copy right, patent and other intellectual property concepts” Given by a lawyer John Rose. Its free – RSVP by Oct. 16.
November 14, 7 – 10 pm. Party to raise money for leadership scholarships in Dekalb county. Email Jeanne Brady.
Board Meeting Report: Tim Hintz reported on the recent board meeting: TACA is running on a deficit and has been for the last few years. Bill Mullins, the new director, will assume part time hours over the summer to help with this. TACA has been soliciting more members to help with income and has 30 more members this year than last. Grants also help with income. The fiscal year has moved to July 1st to June 30th from a calendar year so some budget issues were expected with that change. There will not be a biennial show this year – TACA is trying for 2012. Reminder that TACA is a member driven organization so if someone wants a workshop or anything else any member can make that happen. Trips to artists’ studios, galleries, etc all take organization but anyone can do it so step on up and take charge!
NEW PROJECT: I would like to begin compiling a directory of sorts for TACA members about different shows that everyone has done. I still have to come up with a format so I can gather some consistent information but the idea is to have members send me information about: what shows they have done this year (or in years past), generally how they did, why do you think you did well or didn’t do well at that particular show, what type of art do you sell, what is the price range of the art you sell, booth fees, was the show well organized and friendly, quality of the other booths at the show (ie: were there a lot of fine crafts or more marshmallow shooters), deadlines and format of applications, juried or not. This would be shared with TACA members. Everyone at the meeting thought it was a good idea and would be useful to everyone, especially ACC graduates and new comers to the area. Feedback is appreciated. I will send out some sort of form when I get it ready and will also contact Katie Haile to see if she wants to expand this idea to other chapters as well.
Next Highland Rim Chapter Meeting:
- Saturday, December 5th, 2009, at Carol and Andrzej's home, noon.
Please RSVP the host before each meeting!
MEMBERS IN THE NEWS:
- Adele Seitzinger: This summer the two venues I participated in were the Maddux/ART Upstairs Gallery where I had a solo exhibiton through the month of July. They are still looking for people to fill their 2010 calendar: contact Marilee Hall or Merritt Ireland, both Highland Rim members.
The other venue was the Fall Fun Fest which I had not had my own booth in for several years. My daughters also put some related art works in my booth. Though the sales weren't spectacular, they were satisfactory. We thought there were smaller crowds than in past years. This is a good venue, very low key, friendly artists. The rain ended the first night a bit early, but I don't think it made that much difference. There are just a limited number of spaces, so If you want to participate next year, be sure to watch deadlines!
- Cindy Billingsly: I have been in the Brentwood Library, Brentwood, TN for the past three months painting 15 murals and will be installing 10 of the 19 sculptures of Tennessee animals. The ribbon cutting ceremony is this Sat. Sept. 19 from 10:00 am until 1:00 with any Highland Rim members in the area would like to come see.
