May 2011 Newsletter & Minutes

Chapter Meeting was held Thursday, May 19th, 2011 at ART A LA CARTE. Members in attendance were: Laurie Hall, Sharon Eckert, Claudia Lee, Adele Seitzinger, Cheryl Cratty, Andrzej Gutek, Tracey (Williams) Young, Jody Windus, Ray Hatch, Tim Hintz, Kip Kniep, Susan De May, Carol Ventura, Ryan Pate, Rob Harvey, Kathe Reed-Nelson; guests: Jess Atnip, Arlene Dubo.

Treasurer's report: We have about $1092. We used $300 for the rent at Art A La Carte. Last year we gave $500 to 2 TACA fairs which she said we could instead use to rent a group booth. We also gave $100 for the Membership Drive Contest and $500 to the FACCT School Grant Program.

ART REVOLUTION: Jessica Atnip presented information on this project to provide art classes to students grade 7 – 12. Classes will be held at the community center in Smithville. There will be a 10:1 student:teacher ratio. Courses will be in drama, pottery, culinary arts and will last 9 weeks. She is asking for volunteers as well as donations for equipment. There is a lot of community support for the project. Students will pay tuition. Contact Jessica Atnip at 615-440-3614 or jessatnip@gmail.com.
ART A LA CARTE: Arlene Dubo, gallery owner, discussed how her gallery works and what she does to provide publicity, etc. Artists pay anywhere from $25 - $40/month depending on how much work they have in the gallery. She takes a 20% commission from all artists. The rent is what keeps the gallery going since sales have been variable. She has been open a little over a year now and has about 40 local artists and is beginning to get inquiries from artists in Nashville and Knoxville. Arlene sponsors a variety of events in the gallery such as music, book signings, and featured artist receptions. The gallery is in the newspaper about every 2 weeks as well as being publicized on local radio. She has an on going relationship with an interior decorator that buys work and sends clients to the gallery. Arlene said that she thinks the last 3 months with TACA and VAS members being highlighted in the gallery have resulted in some good sales. She suggested items be priced under $300 as these seem to sell best. Her hours are 11- 6, Tuesday – Sat.
After much discussion by those members present the following motion was passed: Highland Rim TACA chapter will enter into an agreement with Art A La Carte. We will pay $25 total a month with $12.50 coming from the chapter and $12.50 from the participating artist. We will continue this agreement through the end of Dec 2011 and then review it again. TACA members can sign up for a month and will be the Highland Rim TACA Artist of the Month. Arlene will be encouraged to become a TACA member.
Details were discussed that were not part of the motion such as having people sign up and then using a lottery to place people in particular months since Sept – Dec. can be the highest selling months. Further information about the logistics will be worked out and sent to members.
After the motion passed it was presented to Arlene Dubo who agreed to it and to work with the chapter to figure out the best way to display the TACA Artist of the Month.
So we are offering this to all Highland Rim TACA members to have the opportunity to have a display for a month in an established gallery for $12.50 plus 20% commission. Arlene will work with the individual artist for publicity for each show. Contact Laurie Hall at wheelnkiln2@aol.com or Rob Harvey at creekbendpottery@yahoo.com.
MEANWHILE ALL ARTISTS WHO HAVE WORK IN THE CURRENT SHOW NEED TO EITHER REMOVE THEIR WORK BY THE END OF THIS MONTH OR MAKE ARRANGEMENTS WITH ARLENE TO CONTINUE AS INDIVIDUALS IN HER GALLERY.
TACA SPRING FAIR: The Chapter Booth brought in $4200 and gave TACA $800. There were 10 people participating and it all went very smoothly. Several Highland Rim members won awards. Tim Hintz won best of show, Marilee Hall and Anderson Baily won Merit Awards, Joanna Bleasdale won Best New Exhibitor. Congrats to everyone!
SHANK CENTER FOR THE ARTS: Sharon Eckert presented information on the new Shank Center for the Arts in Crossville. There will be an opening (May 21, 10 am – 7 pm, 140 N. Main St. across from the Depot) of the show Tread and Threads. She invited everyone to check out the space. For more information, contact Sharon at steckert@frontiernet.net. She also presented information on the Cumberland Business Incubator. Again, contact Sharon for more information.
BOARD MEETING: Next board meeting will be August 20th at the Craft Center. There will be a reception/pot luck following at Tim and Jeanne’s. Directions, details, etc to follow.
Tim Hintz proposed that when we have money we should consider purchasing a tent to rent to members who don’t have one to use. Proposal will have to be revisited.
Jess Jones gave a very informative presentation on her method of copying images on fabrics and hand made papers. Thanks so much for sharing you techniques and enthusiasm!
